Homework:
Monday 3/16 - cell project (at least 20 min/night this week)
Tuesday 3/17 - cell project
Wednesday 3/18 - cell project
Thursday 3/19 - cell project
Friday 3/20 - diffusion vs osmosis worksheet, cell project due Monday!
We are going full-force in our Biology unit right now! Students are in the process of completing a cell project about the parts of a cell and how they fit together. Project requirements and research links can be found HERE. On Monday (and part of Tuesday) we took notes about these different parts and how they fit together. Wednesday we will get an opportunity to check out the Cell Simulator app, which should help students see the connections between all these different cells parts and better understand what they do. However, we will also begin this week Tuesday and Wednesday a lab called "Exchange with the Environment part I." This lab will introduce students to diffusion. After learning about diffusion we will complete "Exchange with the Environment part II" on Thursday and Friday about a related process - osmosis. By the end of the week they should be able to explain and compare/contrast these two processes. Ask them about it at home!

As we begin this week, we will finish our Cell Lab from last week. The goal is that by the end of lab students will be able to create a cellular model, using evidence from their investigation, that shows that living things are made of cells - either 1 or many different numbers and types.
On Tuesday they will be introduced to a Cell Project that they will be completing by March 23. The rest of this week will be work time for students as they, "develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole, and the ways parts of cells contribute to the function." The project has students research different parts of a cell (in general) and a certain type of cell (more specifically). They will demonstrate what they know through a creative project. The project requirements can be found HERE. Homework: Mon 3/9 - finish Cell Lab questions Tue 3/10 - finish researching 2 parts of a cell Wed 3/11 - finish researching all 5 parts of a cell Thurs 3/12 - bring materials in for project! Fri 3/13 - project (due March 23) We began our new biology unit last week with a great lab called "What is Life?" Students used this lab to not only determine the difference between biotic and abiotic matter (cells!) but also develop a model that outlines that requirements that must be met in order for an organism to be considered living.
This week Monday (and possibly Tuesday) we will use this model as we debate the "life status" of an object. The next day we will watch some videos about the history of the Cell Theory. This well-known scientific theory will be the foundation that we will use as we develop our own cellular model! Wednesday and Thursday (or Thursday and Friday) we will be using the microscopes to investigate cells and use these experiences to develop our model of what cells are, what they look like, and what parts they have. If we finish all this work early, we'll get started on our next goal: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole, and the ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
